Directed by Satish Kaushik, Zee5’s Original Film Kaagaz is a heartwarming story of bandmaster Bharat Lal’s long and tedious effort to prove that he is alive! Kaagaz, produced by Salman Khan and Nishant Kaushik stars Pankaj Tripathi in the leading role. Actors Mita Vashisht, Amar Upadhyay, Satish Kaushik, Neha Chauhan are a few of the other cast members.
Based on the life of Lal Bihari, the film depicts the struggles of a common man against bureaucracy. The film follows the life of a "dead" bandmaster Bharat Lal who has been declared officially dead. Bharat discovers a plot wherein a few members of his family have had him declared dead to gain ownership of a piece of land that he owns. Thus, begins his 19-year long struggle to get a hold of a 'Kaagaz' that proves he is alive!
The film truly captures the complexities of the bureaucracy in India. Pankaj Tripathi yet again shows us what a brilliant and versatile actor he is. Tripathi manages to capture the wide array of emotions of a man fighting a corrupt system. Monal Hajjar shines in her role as Bharat Lal's wife Rukmini. Her screen presence is outstanding. Mita Vashisht, Amar Upadhyay, Satish Kaushik, Neha Chauhan and other supporting actors have also delivered a stellar performance. Kudos to the film's casting director for putting together a perfect cast.
Satish Kaushik's direction is just fantastic. Kaushik does justice to the life and 'death' of Lal Bihari. The film also offers good songs and a great background score. The production design and cinematography is also outstanding. Kaagaz transports the viewer to the era that the film is set in.
While the film is engrossing in the first half, it gets a little too repetitive in the latter half. The film's editing could have been better. While the story and premise of the film are great, the screen-play however, fails to translate the greatness.
All in all, Kaagaz is worth the watch. Kaagaz is engrossing, funny and heart-warming. Kaagaz has a lot to offer to the audience with its interesting story, a great background score and a stellar cast
