Jaya Bachchan reunited with filmmaker Ramesh Talwar to perform in the play, Dr. Mukta. The two had previously worked together in Yash Chopra's Silsilay, where Ramesh was the director's assistant. Initially worried about her debut in theatre, Jaya was convinced by Ramesh to tour abroad with him on two separate plays, Maa Retire Hoti Hai and Dr. Mukta. They had several days of rehearsals and performed in front of a small private audience before embarking on their tour.
In Dr. Mukta, Jaya played the role of a woman who had to hide many secrets from her family members. Ramesh revealed that her fans in the US traveled 300 miles to see her perform live. However, Jaya was reluctant to sign autographs for fans in most places but signed for them later. Despite being a natural actor, Ramesh had to remind her not to take the role personally but to remember that it was just a play.
Ramesh also recalled how Jaya's staff helped him arrange a meeting with her before she came on board. He assured her that they would rehearse for 40 days and stage the play in Mumbai before going abroad. Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya's well-wishers, friends, and family attended a rehearsal in Bhaidas Hall, Vile Parle.
Jaya recently turned 75 and is set to return to films with Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani. Throughout her career, she has taken several acting breaks.
