The film featured Roja as the female lead. Satya Narayana, Vijay Kumar and Babu Mohan have played the other important roles in the movie. Bhairava Dweepam is a socio-fantasy film which revolves around the life of Vijay (Nandamuri Balakrishna). He gets separated from his mother and later falls in love with a princess called Padmavathi. What Vijay is unaware of is Padmavathi is under the spell of a witch. How he saves her from that spell and reunites with his mother forms the rest of the story.
Bhairava Dweepam can be easily considered as one of the best works of Balakrishna. B. Venkatarami Reddy bankrolled the film under the banner Chandamama Vijaya Combines. Kabir Lal has handled the cinematography of it and D. Raja Gopal has edited it. Music composed by Madhavapeddi Suresh was also a big hit. Songs like Naruda O Naruda, Yentha Yentha Vintha Mohamo and Sri Thumbura Narada remained as classic songs in Telugu cinema. The film won nine Nandi Awards, including Third Best Film, Best Director and Best Art Director categories.
