Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday asked MPs to wear a mask and raise awareness about COVID-appropriate behavior amid recent coronavirus concerns.
The COVID-19 infection is once again on the rise in several nations, according to Mr. Birla. Mr. Birla arrived at the House wearing a mask.
He claimed that the government had moved swiftly regarding covid precautions. It had requested that everyone wear masks in crowded areas and adhere to COVID-related measures. "We should be vigilant, keeping in mind the past trends of the pandemic," he told the members.
Additionally, he stated that MPs should all wear masks, which are accessible at the Lok Sabha chamber's entrances.
On Wednesday, the administration suggested that individuals vaccinate themselves and use masks. Additionally, it stated that airport random sample testing was for travelers coming from China and other nations.
Masks were given out to media covering the Winter session of Parliament in addition to MPs.
According to sources, the Lok Sabha secretariat has ordered staff members to wear masks and adhere to distance rules.
"We were asked to wear masks before entering the Lok Sabha chamber. We welcome this step. The Lok Sabha secretariat had made arrangements to ensure enough masks were available for members," said BJP MP Manoj Tiwari.
Harsh Vardhan, a former minister of state for health, said he came to the meeting wearing a mask. He stated that he was happy to see that Mr. Birla had also pushed others to do the same.
"Even before the Speaker's advice, members were wearing masks. It is a healthy sign and sends a good signal to people that MPs have started wearing masks and they should also follow," he said.
