IAF Chief Flags Critical Deficiencies In The Air Force

Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, said that the air force needed to address critical deficiencies to retain its combat edge. The IAF is currently experiencing a fighter squadron shortage. IAF is also considering introducing mid-air refuelers expediently. Airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) are also sought after.

“There are certain critical deficiencies. Deficiencies like a shortage of fighter squadrons and force multipliers must be prioritized. This should be done to retain our combat edge.” Chaudhari made the statement during his opening remarks at the 19th Subroto Mukerjee Seminar in New Delhi.

Currently, the air force has about 30 combat squadrons instead of the recommended 42. To increase the potential of the air force, more refuellers and AWACS are also required.

“From an airpower perspective, IAF will be expected to contribute across the full spectrum of conflict. Airpower has the capability to deter, and defend. And if required, punish the adversary in a conflict,” the IAF chief said.

There is a need to build the capacity to fight and win future wars. The IAF, according to him, must develop into an aerospace force.

India’s neighborhood continues to remain volatile and uncertain, Chaudhari said. “Amidst this volatility, we must enhance our collective strength. (We can do this) by partnering with nations that share common beliefs and values. We must use our image as a stable country with considerable economic heft. This image must be used to forge mutually beneficial relationships and strategic partnerships.”
