Half of the world's population share beautiful memories with the cartoon show Tom and Jerry. Legendary animator and illustrator, Gene Deitch, who directed a few episodes of Tom and Jerry, has passed away today. He was 95. Gene died unexpectedly at his apartment in Prague's Little Quarter neighborhood.
There were no additional details on the death of Gene. Apart from being an animator and illustrator, Gene is also a well-known director and producer as well. His short film Munro on the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in the year 1960. He also got nominated for the same award in 1964 for the films Here's Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship. Before that, he had also created the Terrific Tom series. The show Sidney's Family Tree, which got co-produced by him, got nominated for the Academy Award in 1958.
Gene Deitch was born on August 8th, 1924, in Chicago. He came to Prague in 1959, only on an intention to stay there for 10 days. But after falling in love with his wife Zdenka, Gene decided to make the city as his home. Gene had directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry and also a few episodes of Popeye The Sailor. In 2004, Gene received the Winsor McCay Award for his contribution towards animation. He had survived with his wife and three sons. All his sons are also animators and illustrators. All fans of Tom and Jerry and the animation lovers paid their condolences for Gene Deitch's family. They also paid respect to him by posting the pictures of Tom and Jerry all over social media.
