Ram Gopal Varma, Attracted By Urmila Matondkar's Beauty; The Director Opens Up

Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) is a director who once gave Hindi cinema a new visual language. He crossed over from Telugu to Bollywood and created huge waves in Bollywood by creating huge hits like Rangeela, Satya, Company, Sarkar. But after 2010, he lost his influence in Bollywood as many films failed. Ram Gopal Varma, who made some low-budget films during the Covid era, was criticized for the amateurish nature of those films. Ram Gopal Varma has also been in the news for controversies. Many of his comments on Twitter have recently come under heavy criticism. But Ram Gopal Varma is the director who gave many beautiful stars to Bollywood during its glory days. He has also worked with superstars including Aamir Khan.

Urmila Matondkar became an overnight sensation with Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela. After the release of the film, Urmila was described as the sex siren of the 90s. The song Rangeela Re and Urmila's dance moves in the film were much appreciated. Urmila's style statement was the most talked about topic that day. Along with that, Urmila's name was also featured in the gossip columns. Her relationship with director Ram Gopal Varma is in the news. Years later, RGV wrote a blog about Urmila. His note was that he was selfish towards the actress and was attracted to her beauty.

Urmila Matondkar was the first girl who influenced me after entering films. I was attracted to her beauty - from her face to her figure...everything about her was divine. She had done a few films before Rangeela which didn't do well. And could not make a big impact on the audience. But after Rangeela, she became the country's sex symbol,' 'That doesn't mean I made her beautiful. I would say she is like a painting, I framed her. Apart from the frame, if a painting is to be truly enjoyed, it needs a suitable place to display it, and that place was Rangeela.'

One of my primary objectives while making Rangeela was to capture Urmila's beauty in the most beautiful way on camera and make her a benchmark for sex symbols. I would say that there has never been a greater cinematic experience than seeing her on the sets of Rangeela through my camera.' 'I don't know how you're going to take this, but the biggest problem I had with Urmila personally was that I couldn't accept that she was a normal human being. She was very loving. I was selfish and always wanted her to be larger than life, even in real life,' Ram Gopal Varma noted at the time.
