Joe Russo: Joker broke the stigma around superhero films

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the DC supervillain, Joker is leading Academy Awards nominations with 11 nominations. 'Endgame' got nominated for a visual effect, Oscar. In an interview, Russo said the film might be dark but it holds an important message at its core. “Joker was a very tragic, very modern story and really representative of existential isolation and the crisis a lot of people are feeling. The moment in it when he's on the talk show, where it's the idea of everyone in the world right now grabbing their megaphones and trying to shout each other down, and he's reacting against that.”

“It's certainly a dark movie and a disturbing movie with a very important message to it. We're ecstatic that it got recognition. It broke through the stigma that seems to be against these films, certainly at the Academy," the director concluded.

In his speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Joaquin Phoenix credited screenwriter Scott Silver for Joker. He said: “You used a superhero character to talk about childhood trauma, gun violence, and mental health." The actor won awards at SAG, Golden Globes, and BAFTA as well.

Joe and his brother Anthony Russo recently wrapped the principal photography on Cherry. The film is a crime-drama. It stars Tom Holland.
