Rajasekhar’s much talked about film, Kalki has hit the screens today. Directed by ‘Awe’ fame Prasanth Varma, the film stars Adah Sharma, Nandita Swetha, Poojitha Ponnada and Rahul Ramakrishna in key roles. The movie is an investigative thriller which is said to be inspired by true events. The story is set in the early '80s of Telangana village of Kollapur where two rival gangs are fighting it out and one among them, Shekar Babu gets killed. To investigate this case an IPS officer and encounter specialist Kalki (Dr. Rajasekhar) is appointed. He tries to untie the knots of politics and power in a conspiracy of a Murder mystery where smuggling, is intensified by a few freak incidents. As he starts getting deep into the case to his surprise, there is much more behind this murder mystery. What is that mystery and how Kalki manages to unveil all this is the entire story of the film.
After getting much-needed success with PSV Garuda Vega, Raja Shekar surely is on a path of reinventing himself. For Kalki, he has worked on his body language to suit the subtle action and he does a good job in his favourite role of a cop. Director Prasanth Varma should be appreciated for showcasing him smartly.
Rahul Ramakrishna effortlessly blends his comic timing with good acting. It was good to see him in a well-scripted role.
Adah Sharma as Padma was okay in a side note love story which can be totally avoided, as it doesn't add any value to the movie.
Siddhu Jonnalagadda gets an important role and he did his part well. Ashutosh Rana looked effective in his role of the main villain. Poojita Ponnada was effective even though she was seen in just a few scenes.
One thing that really stands out in this movie is the camera work by Shivendra who did a superb job in mixing age-old charm effectively.
The production values of the film are pretty good as the film looks quite rich for its budget.
Effective performances from lead actors to character artists.
Background music by Shravan, especially the hip-hop bit played for Rajasekhar's entry. He smartly mixed fusion to suit the setup and mood of the film.
Good element of surprise towards the end of the film.
Outdated story with a cliched screenplay which offers nothing new to the audience.
Films pace and length is another major drawback. Run time is close to 2 hours 20 minutes which looks like three hours because of the dull narration.
Though the cinematography is good there were too many slow-motion shots literally for almost every other scene which at one point looked very silly.
The first half goes for a toss as the story takes forever to reveal the actual twist.
Rajasekhar and Adah Sharma love track looks outdated and has only been used to make the film commercial. This could have been easily edited out and made things better for the audience.
In order to make the audience get confused, the director enters so many characters who have a good purpose. But sadly, they are not unleashed properly in the narrative which keeps deviating the film at many intervals.
On the whole, Kalki is an average investigative thriller which works in the second half. It has few plot loopholes with cliched screenplay and editing as narration at times gone for toss as the director tries to cook up more suspense than needed. There is nothing special or exciting about this film. On a whole average fare.
