Gautham Karthik shines in predictable village story
Vetri (Gautham Karthik) is a lawyer and an angry young man. He cannot sit without taking any action on people who commits a heinous crime. He kills Deivam, the son of dreaded gangster Ganesan (FEFSI Vijayan).
Later, Vetri comes to know that Ganesan was the one who killed his father. He takes on the bigger villain to teach him a fitting lesson to not commit any crime and live by the rules.
Gautham Karthik has done city-based roles which suit him the most. For the first time, he has essayed a guy from a village and he looks out-of-place in a few places.
Manjima Mohan as Madhu is a lawyer who wants to question people who commits many wrongdoings. However, she doesn’t have a substantial role in the film.
FEFSI Vikatan plays the role of a dreaded gangster and is apt for the role he had played several times before. His reactions are perfect for any given scene.
Vinodhini as Gautham Karthik’s sister has delivered a memorable performance and proves that she is an excellent character artist.
Director Muthaiah’s Devarattam follows a predictable storyline like his earlier films. In this film, he as addressed several issues such as sexual abuse meted out to a woman.
The first half of the film gives everyone a flavour of Madurai so much that you get a feeling you are witnessing the happenings in Madurai.
The stunt sequences in the film are choreographed exceptionally well. Especially, the slo-mo shots of Gautham Karthik bring in the chills.
Devarattam’s music reminds everyone of the local flavour of Madurai and is apt for the intense story that film is.
The main issue with Devarattam is its high predictability. Every single scene is ripped off from his previous films or films of the same genre.
Muthaiah’s dialogues are tiring to listen to as they have force-fed unnecessary messages and alliterations. Above all, he has incorporated rhyming dialogues which induces sleep.
Devarattam is a cliched rural entertainer that can be watched once. Even though the scenes are repetitive, the story is interesting enough to watch on the big screen.
