Ranarangam review: A wasted opportunity for Sharwanand

Ranarangam Story:

Deva (Sharwanand) is desperate to earn money and he doesn’t think twice to take the illegal route to earn the money. During the prohibition era, he doesn’t hesitate to smuggle liquor.

In doing so, he is seen as a huge competition by local MLA Simhachalam (Murali Sharma). Meanwhile, he also falls in love with Geetha (Kalyani Priyadarshan). How does Deva become a big gangster forms the story?

Ranarangam Performances:

Though the trailer of Ranarangam showed a lot of promise, Sharwanand did not have a single scene that explored his acting abilities.

Kalyani Priyadarshan as Geetha has gotten a lot of scope for performance. She has done a splendid job in portraying the role with a lot of finesse.

It is surprising to see why and how Kajal Aggarwal accepted this role as she doesn’t have anything to do in the film. She is just there for promotional purposes.

Murali Sharma as the antagonist has gotten a substantial role to play. However, he looks caricaturish in a lot of places which spoils the mood.

Ranarangam Positives:

Director Sudheer Varma said that the film is inspired by The Godfather. He has sold a story on hand which would make for a proper gangster flick.

Music by Prashanth Pillai is one of the strongest points of Ranarangam as it has the capability to make the uninteresting scenes a bit bearable.

Cinematography by Divakar Mani is another advantage of the film. The frames look good and look classy throughout.

A few parts in the first half are good to watch out for. Certain well-crafted scenes are written well.

Ranarangam Negatives:

Despite being a predictable story, the screenplay lacks punch and depth that is needed to make the story interesting.

A gangster story with a predictable storyline needs a strong screenplay and in-depth characterizations. However, the film barely scratches the surface.

Ranarangam Verdict:

The trailer of Ranarangam showed a lot of promise. However, it is a missed opportunity for Sharwanand, Sudheer Varma and team as there is nothing to hold on to the story.
