Ponniyin Selvan Brings The Legendary Mani Ratnam Back
Ponniyin Selvan Brings The Legendary Mani Ratnam Back!
The visualisation of Ponniyin Selvan was a dream of Kollywood for the past 30 years. Mani Ratnam is undoubtedly the most apt director to materialise the dream.
Today, September 30, the much-awaited 2022 movie "Ponniyin Selvan" has finally arrived in theatres. The Kalki Krishnamurthy novel served as the basis for the historical drama. The film is directed by Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam's movie was finally released in theatres in 2019 after 4 years following the release of "Chekka Chivantha Vaanam."
Mani Ratnam has now entered the Indian cinema industry stronger than ever with "Ponniyin Selvan." His subsequent movies, "Ok Kanmani," "Kaatru Veliyidai," and "Chekka Chivantha Vaanam," did poorly at the box office. The director's early films, "Roja," "Bombay," "Alaipayuthey," "Thalapathi," and "Nayakan," are still well-known across the country. The reception that "Ponniyin Selvan" received after its premiere has helped Mani Ratnam regain his position as a leading figure in the Indian film industry.
The planning and pre-production work for the movie has been ongoing since 2010. The film's filming only started three years ago. Prior to the release of the movie's teaser in August, writer Jeyamohan disclosed that Mani Ratnam and he collaborated with screenwriters to develop the story for "Ponniyin Selvan 1". Nearly 12 years later, it was finally adapted for the big screen. It was also made known that a cinematic adaptation of the book has been in the works since 1985. MGR originally intended to produce it, but Kamal Haasan later acquired the rights to do so in 1990. Additionally, it was recently revealed that Mani Ratnam had the idea to create Ponniyin Selvan along with Kamal Haasan.
