The entire world is fighting against the coronavirus pandemic right now. Almost 2.5 million people got affected by the virus and 1.9 lakh people have lost their lives. All the major industries got shut down and most of the countries got locked down as well. The events which got lined up this year got postponed now. One of them is the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. This oldest and biggest film festival is actually supposed to happen in May. But now, it got postponed indefinitely. We now hear that another major film event, the Venice Film Festival will get held as per the schedule and will not get postponed.
Roberto Cicutto, who is the president of Venice Film Festival's parent organization Venice Biennale, has confirmed that the festival will happen as per the schedule. The 77th edition of the festival will get held this year from September 2nd to September 22nd. Roberto also added that there will not be any joint collaboration between Venice and Cannes Film Festivals.
Earlier, Cannes director Thierry Fremaux stated in an interview that discussions are going on to do something together if the festival gets canceled. Now, with Roberto's statement, it became clear that there are no such plans for the Biennale organizers. Thus, the Venice Film Festival might become the major film festival of this year. On the flip side, the schedule of this year's Cannes Film Festival still remains uncertain. We have to wait for a few more days to get clarity on Cannes.
