Theatres Across Telengana Start Free Shows Of Richard Attenborough's Film ‘Gandhi’
The state government has extensively planned a free showing of the film 'Gandhi' as part of the two-week-long celebrations marking the 75th Independence day. Officials estimate that 22 lakh schoolchildren will see the movie in theatres.
On Tuesday, free screenings of the 1982 Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi' began in 552 theatres across Telangana. From August 9 to August 22, the film will be shown every day from 10 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. in Telugu and Hindi.

On the inauguration day, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar attended a film screening at a theatre in Attapur, Hyderabad. 'Gandhi,' directed by Richard Attenborough, is a biographical film about Mahatma Gandhi's life throughout the liberation fight, following him from 1893 to 1948.
The film, a collaboration between India and the United Kingdom, was released in India on November 30, 1982. At the 55th Academy Awards, it earned 11 nominations and won eight, including best film, director, and actor (for Kingsley).
The screening of 'Gandhi' is part of the Telangana government's 'Swatantra Bharatha Vajrotsava Dwi Sapthaham,' or two-week-long festivities marking 75 years of India's independence.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao kicked off the celebrations on Monday by hoisting the national flag at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC).
