Although Tovino Thomas had three films out before Thallumaala, the Khalid Rahman-directed picture made more money on its opening day than Vaashi, Dear Friend, and Naradhan combined. It is now on the verge of becoming the actor's first movie to gross more than Rs 50 crore globally.
The film, which also stars Kalyani Priyadarshan, Shine Tom Chacko, Lukman Avaran, Johnny Antony, and Swati Das, was released in theatres at the same time as Kunchacko Boban's Nna Thaan Case Kodu, which, according to its producers, has already raked in more than Rs 50 crore.
Thallumaala has reportedly made more than Rs 46 crore at the box office. In its fourth week, the film is still doing well, with Nna Thaan Case Kodu serving as its primary rival. The Tovino-starring film Palthu Janwar doesn't appear to have faced many obstacles, but it could suffer next week when three Onam releases, including Kunchacko's Ottu, Siju Wilson's Pathonpathaam Noottaandu, and Biju Menon's Oru Thekkan Thallu Case, open in theatres.
In a previous interview, Tovino had also discussed the negative reviews the blockbuster movie had gotten. "I have heard a lot of people say that Thallumaala lacks a story. But it has, and that is why the movie started to be enjoyable. In fact, it has more depth than what has been displayed on the screen, and I think that the audience can infer and grasp that. How can you account for the kind of response the climax sequence received in the theatres I had visited if you claim that it lacked any emotional content?" he asked.
The actor is also confident that people in India would adore the film when it debuts on OTT later this month. A group of pals who frequently get into fights at crucial moments in their life seems to be the focus of the all-out entertainer Thallumaala.
