Rajesh Touchriver's Social Thriller 'Dahini: The Witch' Enters The Swedish International Film Festival

Tanishtha Chatterjee and JD Chakravarthi will star in the next film 'Dahini,' directed by National Award winner Rajesh Touchriver. Ashique Hussain, Badrul Islam, Angana Roy, Riju Bajaj, Jagannath Seth, Sruthy Jayan, Dilip Das, and Dattatreya appear in the film.

The social thriller about the plague of witch-hunting has gained a new accolade. It's been accepted for the Swedish International Film Festival. This is the drama's second significant worldwide distinction. It was named Best International Feature Film at the Pacific Beach International Film Festival. The film depicts witch-hunting and how it leads to gender-based violence in a striking way. In circumstances where women are disliked for not complying with social gender stereotypes, they become victims of witch-hunting. The film was shot in Odisha's Mayurbhanj area (where witch-hunting is claimed to be common). The writing staff was astonished to learn several facts while researching for the film. The audience will undoubtedly be startled as well. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), between 2001 and 2019, around 2937 women were murdered in India on accusations of practicing witchcraft. 102 individuals were murdered in the year 2019. However, only six states have a special law allowing authorities to use witchcraft as a motivation for murder, despite witch-hunting occurring in over 17 states. It is obvious that the actual number of instances might be far greater than the published figures. Talking about the movie, Producer Pradeep Narayanan said, "How are thousands of women being witch-hunted in today's India? Our film is a poignant attempt to openly talk about the shocking issue. I feel fortunate to have produced the movie."
