At his first award ceremony in 1992, Shah Rukh left the stage leaving the audience's eyes wet. When Shahrukh came to the stage to receive the Best Newcomer Award, he spoke about his mother and touched the hearts of his fans. Shah Rukh was speaking while presenting the award to his mother Latif Fatima Khan. Shah Rukh also recalled the time he won a medal in third grade and ran home to show it to his mother, but her mother was not there. Shah Rukh's words were that it is such an experience now. 'I am getting a major award in cinema for the first time, and here too now I have no mother. This is for mom', said Shahrukh. Shahrukh's mother died in 1990.
Later, once in an interview with Simi Garewal, Shah Rukh also talked about that moment, when Simi reminded him of the silence of the people who heard Shahrukh's words and the applause that followed, Shahrukh replied that he was only thinking about his mother at the time of the award and therefore did not remember anything else that happened that day. 'I wanted my mother to see me in 70mm, much bigger than what I am,' but she never got to see his success, Shahrukh said wistfully. Then the actor opened up about his mother. These are Shahrukh's words.
'Mum was very social and loved meeting people. They could create a ruckus anywhere. I wasn't like that. After his father's death, his mother took care of everything. His father died of cancer. That was ten years ago. We didn't have much financial situation then. Mother was a social worker and a magistrate. They took good care of the house, I didn't have to ask anything twice, they gave me everything I needed,' said Shah Rukh. "I was shooting in Goa and my mother was diabetic. When I came back from Goa, my mother had an injury on her leg which had started to spread. He was admitted to the hospital but his condition worsened. I was not ready and the same happened with my father. I stayed with him in the hospital and he slowly passed away.'
'I was not prepared for my mother's death. I had never prayed, but one day when my mother was in the ICU with a sudden seizure, I went to the parking lot of the hospital and prayed for the first time. Someone once said that if you pray 6000 times, your mother will not be in pain. I did, and the doctor told me that mother was going.' 'My belief was that one dies when one is satisfied with life. So I went to my mother and told her that I will never be happy, that I will be a bad person, and that I will not take good care of my sister. But there was a beautiful look in my mother's eyes, and those eyes told me to go, to rest, and so she went.' Shahrukh Khan remembered.
