Oscars 2020 has been severely criticized for its lack of diversity in its nominees in various categories. However, just like any other year the academy awards have chosen some stellar work as their nominees.
In the most prestigious award, the best picture award, most have argued that the award will probably go to Sam Mendes's 1917 or Scorsese's The Irishman. Another top contender is Bong Joon Ho's Parasite which has taken a lot of people by surprise with its subtle narrative about the class divide and climate change. 1917 follows the story of a few soldiers during the first world war. The film needs a special mention for its brilliant camerawork and cinematography. The Irishman is another great film that brings back Hollywood's likeness towards gangster films. However this time Scorsese has brought the genre back in all its Glory.
It isn't just these niche films that call attention towards itself but even more commercial films like Avengers Endgame have found a place in the nominees. Avengers Endgame which now sits comfortably as the single most grossing film ever had nominated for Best Visual effects alongside Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Lion King to name a few.
Stay tuned on 10 February for updates on the winners at Oscars 2020.
