Producers Guild of India (PGI), has set up a relief fund to support the daily wage workers of the Hindi film industry. Popular streaming website Netflix has donated $1 million (Rs. 7.64 crores) towards this relief fund.
PGI relief fund got started a few days back to support the daily wage workers who have no income source due to the ongoing shutdown. Netflix also announced four weeks of pay for all the important crew members who were actually supposed to work on its productions in India. Netflix has been making a lot of Indian original films and series off late. Thus, many crew members are working on these shows and films. As they have no work now, Netflix decided to support all of them now.
A spokesperson of Netflix said that they are grateful to work with PGI to support the daily wage workers of the film industry, from electricians to carpenters, hairstylists to spot boys. He added that crews in India always played a pivotal role in Netflix's success. Thus, Netflix is doing its part in helping those technicians now.
Not only Netflix, but many other Bollywood studios and stars are helping their bit in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Popular actor Akshay Kumar donated an amount of Rs.25 crores to PM-CARES fund. Shah Rukh Khan is donating for various causes as well. Noted producer Ekta Kapoor announced a donation of Rs. 2.5 crores. Other actors like Karthik Aryan, Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan have also announced their donations towards relief funds.
