Kaali Poster Row: Leena Manimekalai Clarifies Her Stand On Twitter

Hindutva organizations are against the director Leena Manimekhalai after releasing a poster showing goddess Kali smoking a cigarette. Leena now faces many cases across the country. But without fearing the lawsuits, director Leena has stood her ground. Leena's latest tweet has once again become a topic of discussion in film, political and general circles.

“My Kaali is queer. She is a free spirit. She spits at the patriarchy. She dismantles Hindutva. She destroys capitalism, She embraces everyone with all her thousand hands.”

Leena Manimekalai made a documentary movie called Kali. The first look poster came out recently as part of the promotion of this documentary. But in the first look poster, Goddess Kali is seen smoking a cigarette. She is also carrying a queer flag on the poster. Tweeting the poster of Kali Mata from her official Twitter account, Leena said ‘It is very thrilling and exciting to unveil the Kali documentary poster at the Aga Khan Museum in Canada. I am thrilled to bring this documentary to you.’ After controversy erupted against the poster, Leena took to Twitter to clarify her position about the poster. She explained that she did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiment with the poster. But she asks civil society to respect her right to freedom of speech and expression.
