Javed Akhtar Offers His Opinions On The Boycotting Tradition In Bollywood

You may have seen hashtags like #BoycottAamirKhanmovies and #BoycottKareenaKapoorkhan circulating on social media. It was days before the Laal Singh Chaddha movie starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan was released. Not just Laal Singh Chaddha has been affected by social media boycott tendencies. Brahmastra, Vikram Vedha, Pathaan, and many other films have recently been the target of boycott campaigns. Many famous people have voiced their opinions about this Bollywood cancel culture. Javed Akhtar has expressed his opinion on these boycott initiatives and claimed that they are just a fleeting fad.

The seasoned poet and writer were recently questioned about the boycott and cancel mentality that is growing in popularity in Bollywood. Javed Akhtar claimed in an interview with ETimes that the boycott culture is ineffective and that a good movie will succeed despite a boycott. He said “It is a passing phase. It is very evident that it doesn’t work. If the film is good and is appreciated by the audience, it will work. If it is not good and not appreciated by the audience, it won’t work. I don’t think this kind of announcement of cancel culture and boycott works at all,”

Anurag Kashyap, a director, discussed social media boycott patterns in an interview with Pinkvilla. He stated: I am used to it. It affects those whose films do over Rs. 100 cr. My films have not even gone beyond Rs. 32 cr. For me, it is nothing new. I have been boycotted since the time Twitter started. Ask me questions that affect me.

Before the film's release, there was a significant boycott movement for Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chadha. The actor has before stated in an interview a few years back, “Our country is very tolerant, but there are people who spread ill-will".
