The Legend of Maula Jatt, a historical drama, reunited Pakistani stars Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, who are well known for their work together in the 2014 drama Humsafar. The film is Pakistan's most expensive movie to date, grossing Rs. 100 crores at the domestic box office and earning $10 million worldwide. The movie has been postponed indefinitely from its initial December 30 release date in Indian theatres, according to prior reports. It would be fantastic if it were to be released in India, says Fawad Khan.
Fawad responded to a CNN question regarding the potential release in India with, "That would be great, obviously. If it were to happen, it’s a great way to handshake. It is kind of like those sweets and delights we send across to one another on Eid and Diwali. Films and music are that kinds of exchange. But things are a bit heated still, let’s see. I’ve heard it may release and it may not. So, let us see.”
Fawad Khan added that 2022 was a successful year for Pakistani films. He said, “I am a small part of the industry and the kind of boundaries it pushed, the business it did and the filmmaking style…all of it proved great for Pakistani cinema”.
According to a source, “Zee Studios had already acquired a clearance for The Legend Of Maula Jatt from the Central Board of Film Certification. But on Monday the CBFC recalled the film.”
The movie is set in an untold era when heroes were born and tales were inscribed on the earth with blood. Maula Jatt, a fearsome prizefighter with a troubled history, seeks vengeance on Noori Natt, the most feared warrior in the Punjab region. In this epic story of truth, honour, and justice, loyalties are tested and families have split apart. The movie is the biggest to date in Pakistan.
The 1979 classic Maula Jatt was remade in the Punjabi language. Encyclomedia, owned by Ammara Hikmat, and Lashari Films are the producers. Mirza Gohar Rasheed, Nayyer Ejaz, Shafqat Cheema, Faris Shafi, Ali Azmat, Raheela Agha, Zia Khan, and Saima Baloch are also featured in the movie. The movie premiered on October 13, 2022, in theatres.
