Writer and documentary director Dr. Geeta J's "Run Kalyani" will release in theatres on September 2. The film has screened at several international film festivals and won awards. The film is being released in India by Platoon Distributors. Newcomer Gargi Ananthan plays the role of Kalyani in the film. She won the Best Actress award at the New York Indian Film Festival.
The story of "Run Kalyani" is about Kalyani, who does household chores, who moves from her home to her workplace and becomes a mute witness to the happenings there. The film is produced by Akam Puram Productions, headed by Geetha herself. Akam Puram is a woman-owned independent film production company for documentaries and experimental films in Kerala. Run Kalyan is also being brought to the theatres by Shiladitya Bora's Platoon Distributions. They made the theatrical release of the independent film "Khote Ko Jalebi Khila Riya Hum" possible.
One of the founding members of Kerala's first autonomous women's organization, Dr. Geetha was also a producer of several prominent television programs. "The (A) Miss World," the first television documentary on the controversies surrounding the 1996 Miss World pageant, won the Critics Award. Geeta was returning to India with the first camera she had acquired while she was a teacher at the University of Sussex in England. Then the film "Woman With a Video Camera" is made. Dr. Geetha is one of the earliest women directors in Kerala.
Madhu Neelakandan has done the cinematography of "Run Kalyani." Editor Ajith Kumar The songs in the film are composed by Srivalsan J. Menon. Ian MacDonald is the creative producer, and N. Harikumar is a sound engineer.
