Reema Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi's new online series Dahaad will compete in February 2023 at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Indian online series will be the first to ever compete in the competition. Dahaad stars Sohum Shah, Gulshan Devaiah, Vijay Varma, and Sonakshi Sinha. The series has been chosen for the Berlinale Series Competition. Ritesh Sidhwani, Zoya Akhtar, Reema, and Farhan Akhtar produced the drama series.
With the caption "Dahaad’s roar echoes through the #Berlinale as it becomes the first Indian web series to premiere at the festival!" one of the co-producers, Zoya, announced the news on Instagram. In the comments, several friends, coworkers, and fans expressed their congrats. "Fantastic congratulations @reemakagti1," commented Shweta Bachchan. Actor Sikandar Kher contributed a star in the comments. Homi Adajania also shared clapping and red emojis.
The crime drama is set in a sleepy rural town in Rajasthan. It follows sub-inspector Anjali Bhaati (Sonakshi) and her coworkers. They investigate a series of apparent suicides that may potentially be the work of a serial murderer. The official plot summary for the show is as follows: Women are going missing in Rajasthan, and nobody appears to be startled. Anjali Bhaati, a police officer, detects a resemblance between the cases. This includes long night phone calls and a lover who is never in the neighborhood.
Only two of the eight episodes of the crime drama will be shown at the festival. The Hindi series is one of seven works competing for the newly established Berlinale Series Award. The award is presented alongside the Hollywood publication Deadline. Actor André Holland, producer Danna Stern, and playwright Mette Heeno make up the jury for the award. On February 22, 2023, the winner of this segment will be declared.
Reema, the director, has previously worked on the films Made in Heaven, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and Talaash. In the past, Ruchika directed the movie Island City and contributed writing to the 2018 anthology Lust Stories. Gully Boy, a prior production by Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment, was also shown at the Berlinale in 2019 in the special gala section.
