Controversy Arises After Thallumaala Netflix Release; Subtitles Are Edited For The OTT Release

Thallumaala is one of the most successful Malayalam films in recent times. Directed by Khalid Rahman with Tovino Thomas as the lead, the film has also attracted a young audience in a big way. As the name suggests, Khalid Rahman has made the film based on one action sequence after another.

After a one-month theatrical release, the film reached Netflix on September 11 as an OTT release. Various social media reactions indicate that the film is generating a lot of viewers online as well.

Meanwhile, controversy is arising regarding the subtitle of the film. Thallumaala's subtitling company, "Fill in the Blanks," came forward with the allegation through the social media platform. They have posted an open letter on their Facebook page, "Fill in the Blanks," addressing all OTT platforms including Netflix.

For the film Thallumaala, the subtitle was prepared and given to Netflix under the full supervision of the author of that film. But the letter says that many edits and cuts have taken place in the subtitles. In particular, they alleged that the changes made in the subtitles of the songs changed the meaning of the songs themselves.

The "Fill in the Blanks" team says subtitling is an art in which OTT platforms, including Netflix, interfere with the subtitling person's work without informing them. Their post has also been shared by the crew of the Thallumaala movie. "Fill in the Blanks," says that this has been going on in the field of subtitling for a long time, including experts in the field. They also say that many people have expressed their support for this mission.

At the same time, Thallumaala, which was released in theatres on August 12, earned Rs 71.36 crores. Along with Kerala, the film was released in other states and foreign markets on August 12. Tallumaala had a huge global release in the US, Canada, UK, Singapore, Africa, Saudi Arabia, UAE, GCC, and Europe. The Indian release had the best screen count in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is a film that has received good word-of-mouth publicity since the day of its release. Unofficial estimates were that the global gross for the first four days would be Rs. 31 crores.
