Gujarati film Chhello Show, India's official Oscar entry, has made it onto the list of nominees. “We have broken a two-decade-long jinx!,” the director Pan Nalin exclaims in jubilation.
Nalin told a publication about the rigid standards of the Indian film industry. He said that the country can be quite harsh on films that lack stars, studios, or streaming services. "The exhibition sector always underestimates Indian audiences. And the year 2022 has been big proof of that. I have always believed that the audiences are smarter than the filmmaker. If they are given the opportunity to watch films like Chhello Show, they will embrace it. But the film must come to a cinema near them,” he was reportedly quoted as saying.
Chello Show received little exposure in Indian theatres. But Nalin is thrilled that the Academy's team of judges has shortlisted his lesser-known picture. The movie had its world premiere on June 10, 2021. The premiere was at the 20th Tribeca Film Festival. And on October 14, 2022, it opened in Indian theatres.
Chhello Show is gaining popularity abroad by the day. But the tragedy is that it takes international recognition for a few special Indian films to get recognition back home. In this case, a Gujarati film needed to be acknowledged on a global scale before fans back home start to pay attention.
Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, and Richa Meena star in major roles in the film. Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta are among the actors who appear in the movie in key roles and main parts. This coming-of-age story follows a young boy. The story focuses on his infatuation with viewing movies. He watches films all summer long from the projection booth of a dilapidated movie theatre. Then his conservative parents learn what he and his pals are up to. What follows is heartache and a rollercoaster series of events. Despite this, the child is motivated to pursue a career in film by the movies he watches.
The director emphasizes that the "top-notch production quality" and "pure amusement" of this straightforward movie are what appealed to viewers and the Oscar jury. It's a movie about holding onto optimism in the face of adversity and gloom.
