Ayushmann Khurrana plays a gay character in his upcoming film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. While the actor has appreciated his choice of choosing the topic for his film, his recent statement claiming that same-sex marriages legalized in the country upset his fans.
In 2018, the Supreme court only decriminalized homosexuality in India. However, same-sex marriages are still not legal.
While speaking to the press on Tuesday, Ayushmann said, "We are really proud that we are supporting the community. Our country is very progressive that it legalized same-sex marriages."
Seeing the angry reactions to his statement, the actor took to Twitter to admit his mistake. His tweet read: "A genuine slip here though I really wish same-sex marriages get legal in India." In Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Ayushmann essays the role of a homosexual man and his journey of making aware the society around him, telling them that it is a way of being and is not unnatural.
The film's cast includes Ayushmann, Jitendra Kumar, Gajraj Rao, and Neena Gupta among others. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is set to hit theatres on February 21.
