Veteran Bollywood actresses Asha Parekh and Tanuja have spoken out about ongoing issues of pay disparity, ageism, and lack of hygienic conditions on film sets in the Indian film industry. In a recent interview on Maitri: Female First Collective on YouTube, the actresses discussed the same problems that have persisted in Bollywood for decades. Both actresses acknowledged the industry's gender pay gap, with men having a higher standing than women. They noted that even Hollywood has struggled with the issue.

Asha Parekh, who began her career as a child artiste, pointed out ageism in the film industry. She mentioned how Amitabh Bachchan, at his age, still receives important roles. Meanwhile, actresses her age struggle to find relevant parts. Tanuja also chimed in, adding that women are now being offered grandmother roles. In addition, Asha Parekh also highlighted the lack of proper bathrooms on film sets. She recalled how studios often had only one bathroom for everybody. And they were usually in terrible condition. She recalled how actors were told to remain silent about the issue. These problems are not new in the Indian film industry. Recently, actor-politician Hema Malini also highlighted ageism in the industry. She pointed out the absence of author-backed roles for women of her age. This was despite the rise of OTT platforms in recent years. It is imperative that these issues be addressed and rectified in the film industry. Gender pay gaps and ageism are unacceptable, and all actors should have access to clean and hygienic facilities while working on set.
