On Sunday Golden Globes celebrated its 77th award ceremony and Ellen DeGeneres became the second-ever recipient of the Carol Burnett Award. The award was introduced in celebration of Carol Burnett's contribution to television in 2019. The award is meant to honor and celebrate any person who has done outstanding service to the television industry off or on-screen.
Ellen DeGeneres won the prestigious award on Sunday celebrating her decade long journey in the TV industry. Kate McKinnon introduced Ellen before giving the award and spoke of the outstanding role model that Ellen is. She spoke of how Ellen's journey in the industry despite being openly gay is nothing but extraordinary for more such gay actors and actresses to express themselves truly.
Ellen herself received the award and laughed about how she came to the ceremony knowing she will win. She made other jokes but the highlight of her speech came in her reflection on the power that television has. She said, "All I ever wanted to do was make people feel good and laugh, and there's no greater feeling than when someone tells me I've made their day better with my show or that I've helped them get through sickness or a hard time with their lives," she said. "The power of television for me is not that people watch my show, but that they watch my show and then they're inspired to go out and do the same thing in their own lives. They make people laugh or be kind or help someone that's less fortunate than themselves and that is the power of television and I'm so, so grateful to be a part of it."
